DRIVING THE GORGE

ON HIGHWAY 14

Following are the significant Mileposts along Highway 14 in Washington as it unfolds eastward from Beacon Rock State Park to the Sam Hill Memorial Bridge at Maryhill State Park.

Note: Extensive highway construction is scheduled for the spring and summer of 2010 on Wahington's Highway 14 between the Bridge of the Gods on the west end and the Hood River Bridge on the east end. There will be on-going highway closures and travel lane restrictions continuing into September, as crews clear potential rockfalls from cliffs above the highway.

While there will be a lot of work done near Dog Mountain, the Dog Mountain trailhead parking lot and trail will be open unless blasting is scheduled. The highway itself will be closed from 4-6 p.m. weekdays through June 14, then more frequently through Sept. 2. Delays of no more than two hours are expected and can be avoided by crossing to I-84 on the Hood River Bridge or the Bridge of the Gods.

Mile 36	Bridge of the Gods ($1 Toll) across the Columbia River into Cascade Locks.
Mile 36	Roadside turnout with picnic tables on the river side of the highway
Mile 38	Columbia Gorge Interpretive Center to the north

Mile 39	Community of Stevenson, Washington
Mile 44	Turn north here on Hot Springs Avenue to visit Carson, Washington
Mile 45	Enter the community of Home Valley

Mile 48	Dog Mountain hiking tail trailhead and parking

Mile 51	Cross Dog Creek

Mile 51	Turn north here to visit the communities of Cook and Willard and the Willard National Fish Hatchery

Mile 52	Cross the Little White Salmon River

Mile 56	Spring Creek Fish Hatchery to the south. This is a popular wind surfing launch point. The historic Columbia Gorge Hotel sits atop the bluff across the river.

Mile 58	Cross the White Salmon River. Running north along the east side of the river is Highway 141 to the communities of White Salmon, Husum, BZ Corners, Trout Lake and the Mount Adams recreational area.

Mile 60	Visitor Information on the south side of the Highway

Mile 60	Hood River Toll Bridge (75 cents each way) and Highway 35 cross the Columbia River

Mile 61	Community of Bingen

Mile 66	Rowland Lake

Mile 69	Chamberland Lake State Rest Area with picnic tables and toilets.

Mile 72	Community of Lyle, Washington

Mile 74	Doug’s Beach State Park. This is day use park very popular with windsurfers.

Mile 77	Community of Murdock

Mile 78	Community of Dallesport

Mile 81	Junction with Highway 197 to Horsethief Lake and across The Dalles Bridge to The Dalles Dam and I-84.

Mile 91	Community of Wishram

Mile 95	Leave the Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area

Mile 95	Maryhill Museum and Heritage Site

Mile 97	Junction with Highway 97. Turn south to Maryhill State Park. The highway then crosses the Sam Hill Memorial Bridge to the community of Biggs Junction on I-84.

Mile 98	Stonehenge Memorial Park. A loosely translated replica of the historic British landmark is here a memorial to our servicemen lost in World War I.
